Private Acupuncture

Private acupuncture has been the dominant form of acupuncture treatments in the United States since it migrated here in the late 20th century. In this type of treatment the patient and acupuncture physician will have both the interview and treatment in a private room setting. The practitioner will briefly converse with the patient about their medical history and current signs and symptoms and then have them lay down on a treatment table either face up or face down and proceed to place needles in specific points to facilitate a change in the given condition. Depending on the points chosen the patient may need to disrobe and put on a gown. The practitioner will then leave the room so the patient can relax during the treatment time – anywhere from 15 – 45 minutes. At the end of the treatment the practitioner will return and take out the acupuncture needles.

History of Acupuncture

Chinese Medical Theory began thousands of years ago with the exploration and philosophy of the place of human beings in the universe. Chinese medicine recognizes the rhythms of nature and places humans in between the vast yang energy of the sky and the solid yin substance that is earth. The elements of fire, water, earth, metal and wood are all represented both in the external world of nature and the internal workings of the organ systems. When symptoms of illness start to emerge a practitioner will inquire of the patient what they are experiencing as well as look at their tongue and feel their pulses to determine where the imbalance exists within the elements and organ systems. The needles are then placed in areas that stimulate the body to come back into balance and restore health.
